Side Effects/Very low appetite

GLP-1 Side Effects

Very low appetite

On Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro & Zepbound

When it happens

Can be persistent throughout the dose cycle — appetite suppression is the primary mechanism of GLP-1 action

Typical peak window

Day 17 after injection

How long it lasts

This often does not go away — it is the desired therapeutic effect. The challenge is ensuring adequate nutrition despite reduced hunger signals.

What helps

  • Eat by the clock, not hunger — set meal reminders if appetite signals are very suppressed
  • Prioritize protein and nutrient-dense foods first; they matter more than total calories on reduced intake
  • Liquid nutrition (protein shakes, smoothies) is valid and easier when solid food isn't appealing
  • Track your protein intake at minimum — 1g per pound of body weight is a reasonable target
  • Extremely low calorie intake (under 800–1000 kcal/day) over weeks is unsustainable and causes muscle loss — seek dietitian guidance

Dose context

Appetite suppression is intentional, but "no appetite" is not the same as "eating nothing." The goal is eating less, not eating nothing.

When to contact your provider

If you are eating fewer than 800 calories per day consistently, experiencing significant muscle weakness, or losing weight at a pace faster than ~1.5% body weight per week.
