Side Effects/Injection site reactions

GLP-1 Side Effects

Injection site reactions

On Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro & Zepbound

When it happens

Immediate to 24 hours post-injection

Typical peak window

Day 02 after injection

How long it lasts

Usually resolves within 1–3 days per injection. Technique and rotation are the primary variables.

What helps

  • Rotate injection sites each week — abdomen, thigh, and upper arm are the standard three sites
  • Let the medication reach room temperature before injecting (15–30 minutes out of the fridge)
  • Inject into a relaxed muscle, not pinched tightly
  • A cold pack before injection can reduce local discomfort
  • Do not rub the injection site after — this can increase local irritation

Dose context

Mild redness, itching, or firmness at the injection site is very common (up to 10% of users) and is not a cause for concern.

When to contact your provider

Redness, warmth, or swelling that spreads beyond the injection site, especially if accompanied by fever — these are rare but warrant evaluation.
